Express Entry Canada

What is Express Entry?

The Express Entry System is an electronic immigration management program launched by the Government of Canada in January 2015. It involves collaboration between the federal government, provincial governments, and Canadian employers to streamline the immigration process for economic immigrants.

Express Entry is mandatory for applicants under the following programs:

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

It is optional for applicants of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), though they can still benefit from participating.

How Express Entry Works

Eligibility

To participate in Express Entry, candidates must first determine their eligibility for one of the federal economic immigration programs. If eligible, they can then create an online profile in the Express Entry system, expressing their interest in immigrating to Canada.

Candidate Profile

Applicants provide information about their:

  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Language proficiency
  • Education
  • Other personal information

This profile is then ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards points based on several factors.

Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The CRS awards a maximum of 1,200 points based on the following criteria:

  • 50 points: For a valid job offer in a NOC A or B occupation.
  • 200 points: For a valid job offer in a NOC O occupation (management-level).
  • 15 points: For a one or two-year diploma or certificate.
  • 30 points: For a degree, diploma, or certificate lasting three years or longer, or for a Master’s, professional degree, or PhD of at least one year.
  • 600 points: For a Provincial Nomination Certificate.
  • 110 points: For age, with the maximum points awarded based on the applicant's age.
  • 160 points: For official language proficiency, depending on language test scores (English or French).

Invitations to Apply (ITA)

Candidates with the highest CRS scores in the Express Entry pool are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Once invited, applicants have 90 days to submit their online application for permanent residence.

Benefits of Express Entry

The Express Entry system offers several advantages, including:

  • • Fast Processing: Individuals and families can become permanent residents of Canada within just a few months after receiving an ITA.
  • • Skilled Workers: The system is designed to attract skilled immigrants who can contribute to Canada's economy and society.
  • • Flexibility: Express Entry caters to a wide range of applicants from different economic backgrounds, including tradespeople, professionals, and students with Canadian work experience.
