Visitor Visa for Canada

What is a Visitor Visa?

A visitor visa, or temporary resident visa, is an official document placed in your passport that indicates you meet the criteria to travel to Canada.

Duration of Stay

Typically, visitors can stay in Canada for up to 6 months. At the port of entry, a border services officer will decide the length of your stay, which could be less or more than 6 months. The officer will note the departure date in your passport and may issue a visitor record outlining the required departure date. If your passport isn't stamped, you can remain in Canada for 6 months from the date of entry or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can request a stamp from the border services officer if needed.

Types of Canadian visitor visas

  • Single entry visa

A single entry visa allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for one-time only. A multiple entry visa allows holders to enter and leave Canada as often as they want as long as the visa is valid. You don’t need to choose which kind to apply for, applicants are automatically considered for multiple entry visas and are only issued single entry visas under unique circumstances.

  • Multiple entry visitor visas

Multiple entry visitor visas permit the holder to travel to Canada for six months at a time as many times as they want, as long as the visa remains valid.
