Overview
A study permit is an official document that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most international students need a study permit to pursue their education in Canada. Ensure you have all necessary documents before applying, and submit your application before traveling to Canada.
Designated Learning Institutions
To qualify for a study permit, you must be accepted by a DLI, which refers to a school approved to host international students as of June 1, 2014. You can check the designated learning institutions list for eligible post-secondary schools. Primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated and do not require a DLI number on the application form.
Application Process
Step 1: Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa
Before receiving a Study Permit, you need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). This visa is issued by the Canadian High Commission and facilitated by Visa Application Centers in your home country. The TRV grants you permission to enter Canada and study.
Step 2: Provide Required Documentation
When applying for a Study Permit, students must submit the following:
- Proof of Acceptance: A letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
- Proof of Financial Support: Evidence that you have enough funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
- Intent to Return: Proof that you will return to your home country after completing your studies.
Step 3: Issuance of Study Permit
Once your application is approved, you will receive your Study Permit upon arrival in Canada. The Study Permit will allow you to remain in the country and pursue your educational goals.
